Tomorrow night is our second Big Wednesday of the year. I hope you will all make it a priority to be there and bring a friend as this is our one Wednesday per month to Urge our friends to be here. We will be planning some fun games and I will be talking on Loving God and Loving others and what that looks like in a very practical way. We don't begin until 7:45 PM so if you have games or practice, we hope you'll grab your whole team and bring them with you.

I also want to encourage you to continue pursuing your small group times. These times are to be encouraging, a time to share your week with your peers as well as have a loving adult care and pray for you.

Finally, everyone needs to be aware that the deadline for winter camp deposits is Sunday, October 11! If you would like to go with us you will need to pay $75 non-refundable deposit. I wanted to share some thoughts from our discussion. First, there were more questions that answers last night but I think I can sum it up something like this. We as Christians are to be set apart. For us to do that we need to know what makes Christ's Followers different than the everyday Joe. What I challenged the kids last night to do, was they need to get to know Jesus, according to the scriptures. Often we think we know Christ and live according to our opinions or the opinion of the last teacher/pastor we heard speak. We seldom take the time to read the Bible, which God has left for us so we might know Him, His Character, His Love, His Justice, His concern for His people, His sacrifice, etc. It is important that if we profess to know Jesus, that we know Jesus! This was the focus of our discussion. I would like to continue this next month at our next UTURN In House. If you have something to add here please feel free to leave a comment. Understand this is a very brief summary of our very long discussion last night.

66-1 Samuel 9:1-2

Day 3: The People asked for a king and God provided Saul. Does God sometimes allow us to get what we ask for even if it's not in His perfect plan for us?

Today's study is a great day to discuss God and His word. Here we have the Israelites asking for something that will not be good for them. God gives them what they ask for. This doesn't fit our nice theology about God. It's like a teenager asked their dad if they can put their hand in the fire and the dad says, "Sure." That doesn't fit my paradigm of what I want from God. The bottom line however, is that God gives us the will to choose Him or reject Him. He knows the outcome of each choice and through His word has revealed to us the same. In this case the Israelites rejected God, and He allowed them to do so. They were caught up in what the world around had, and they were wanting the same things. They took their focus off God and put it on the world and their desires changed. How often is that true today of us?
This passage has much for us to discuss with our kids at home, so let's take time today to do that!

Coffee House!

Last night was great! Thanks for joining us for our 1st UTURN Coffee House of the year. Last night we discussed how to become godly men and women in light of the distracting culture that surrounds us. We also discussed how we, ourselves, can be distracted by "lust of the flesh", "lust of the eyes", and pride in lifestyle". Each of these we need o be aware of and have a plan to prepare to defend against each of them. One thing we can do is spend time in the Word of God as we seek to build our relationship with Him. Another important strategy is to find our identity in Christ and not in what we do or what we have. Finally, we need to surround ourselves with like minded people (Christ Followers).
This is just the beginning in a long process of becoming like Christ and approaching each critical decision in life from a Christ-Like perspective. I hope you will join us next month as we look at Ephesians 6:10-18 and discuss the fact that God gives you as a Christian everything needed to battle spiritual forces in the world.
Check this site daily for updates on our study in LXVI and once a week for our Critical Decisions discussion. Stay plugged in to what God is doing in and through UTURN Ministries! Our boasting can also affect those around us in a negative way, so we must be careful to be building others up and not ourselves.

Have there been times where you have felt weak? How has God given you the strength to overcome?

Be sure to discuss this with your parents as the goal is to have God be in our conversations throughout the day. Thanks for all those who were there. Let's continue to pursue one another through Biblical Fellowship as discussed last night. My prayer as stated last night is that God would truly Unite us in His Son that we might be a youth group that cares for one another and is excited about the opportunity to see one another.

Breakdown for those who missed last night: 9:00 PM Start; swim/volleyball/jump or dive/air hockey/eating/etc.; 10:15 PM Apostles teaching - Acts 2:42 & Hebrews 10:24,25/Student's share challenges and pray for one another; 10:40 PM Last minute announcements; 11:00 PM off to the house. That's it in a nutshell, the time in the word and students sharing was awesome so thanks to all who were involved, continue to lift one another up in prayer this week as we seek to influence those around us with Christ's love.

Last but not least, let's talk Pismo. Next week there is no pool party because we will load up at 11:00 AM and leave for the beach at Pismo. You'll need to confirm your attendance so we can provide transportation but the cost is money you'll need for meals (lunch and dinner). We'll wrap up the night in Cayucos with some fireside worship and 'smores! Check the blog survey if you plan to attend or comment at the bottom of this post! Actually do both, and if your parents would like to drive, let me know as we will need transportation for all who want to go!

Brandon

Summer of Family

This summer our theme is "Family". We believe the Church is to be the Family of God, or the Body of Christ. We understand that you have your close friends, but we are going to be encouraging each other to connect with more of the family this summer. We are intentionally focusing inward this summer to help build the relationships within our group. In the fall we will focus again on our small group ministries with more opportunities to gather together each week on Wednesday nights.
We also will continue to support the families through our monthly family gatherings as well as supply you with daily readings of scripture that we'll be encouraging the students to be reading as well as discussing these with you at home.
And to continue our focus on families we will also meet once a month in homes to involve more of the families in our church to participate in our ministry simply by opening their homes up and allowing them to see what's going on in our ministry.
Our schedule begins the third Wednesday in August with a return to UTURN WEDNESDAYS. An UTURN @ HOME will follow the following week and then in September we'll kick off the regular schedule:
* 1st Wednesday - Family Gathering 7:30 PM in the Worship Center (family focus)
* 2nd Wednesday - Coffee House 7:30 PM in the fellowhip hall (small group focus)
* 3rd Wednesday - UTURN WEDNESDAY 7:00 PM in the Worship Center (outreach focus)
* 4th Wednesday - UTURN @ Home 7:30 PM in homes TBA (relationship focus)
* 5th Wednesday - UTURN EVENT WEEK - Event will fall the weekend following 5th
Wednesday. There will be no actual meeting on the 5th Wed.

There it is at a glance. We hope you'll be praying with us this summer as we shake things up a bit and prepare for the fall and all that God has planned for us.

Text Updates

Be sure and register for text updates to receive the most up to date info about what is going on. Hope we'll see you there.

We are Family!

Last night we discussed the importance of UTURN and Uniting our students. If we are to be salt and light to the world, we will need to encourage one another, sharpen one another, and hold one another accountable. As we do these things and use our individual spiritual gifts to serve each other as well as our community. Our goal this summer is to pursue a "family like" environment within our ministry. We would love to see relationships build between our students of different ages, and backgrounds. This will take effort on everyone's part. We'll trust God in this and allow Him to begin a work in us.

Brandon

The Thursday After

Hey, last night was tons of fun! We are excited to invite you to join UTURN Wednesday, May 27th. This will be a night of games, worship, and celebration. We will be introducing you to the vision and direction of UTURN Ministries and giving you the details about the upcoming summer events. If you haven't registered for UROCK Texting, you can do that on this page, just look in the top right corner of this page and register away. This will get you the most up to date information about our ministry. This summer we will be mobile, moving from house to house for pool parties, so this text service will be very valuable to you and your parents. Finally, I just want to say welcome and come join us. This summer is for food, fellowship, and fun and we hope you'll join us!

Brandon

New Mexico Mission Trip

Don't forget, if you are interested in going to New Mexico with us this summer we will be having an initial meeting for anyone interested. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 makes clear the role of the family in discipleship and we want to support this Biblical Principle in our church families. We also will do our best not to add to an already hectic schedule more "things" to do that pull your kids away from the family(this also means we're trying to be kind to your budget as well). UTURN and ROCK SOLID are not meant to be built around events. Instead we want to focus intentionally on the family as the core of our ministry. We believe this to be the best plan for long term discipleship.
We can not truly support you without supplying the tools for discipleship. We will attempt to do this in a few ways. First we offer daily readings and devotions for your family every month through our "Sixty-Six" curriculum. Second, we also try and update you through blogs, weekly handouts, and verbal/written reminders such as this letter. A third way we will support you is through worship at our monthly Family Gatherings. This is a time focused on worship through singing and sharing. Our aim of these meetings is for you to set an example for you kids as well as worship side by side with them and their peers. This also allows for students who don't have a godly example in their home to get a taste of what a family centered on Christ looks like. Finally, we want to supply you with a few events per year that allow you to lead your family in service such as mission trips, family camps or like events.
Finally, let me say we have not changed our programs in this shift. We still feel the Church has to serve the family by supplementing through programs. Again, we try to keep the calendar friendly to your time and budget. We offer Wednesday (6:30) programs for our jr. high students as well as small groups throughout the week for high school kids. We have launched a Sunday night service for our high school and graduated students that meet at 5:47 P.M. We also offer two or three events per year for outreach as well as our normal winter and summer camps. These programs and events are there to aid you the parent in the discipleship process. These are in no way expected or intended to replace your role as the primary spiritual leader for you family. However, you can be sure that we will encourage your students in the Word and in their walk with Christ.
I pray that 2009 will be a great year for you and your family. We would want to walk with you this year as we pursue Christ together. God bless you and keep you.

Sincerely,
Brandon Price
Pastor of Youth Ministries

New Name

Hey everybody, we've changed the name from UTURN/ROCKSOLID, to UTURN. I can't do justice in summarizing this. Please take time to read it, and think of how it applies to us today.

Communing with God (Ex.25:8-9,20-22)

The tabernacle served as the place where God met with His people. The basic Hebrew word translated tabernacle (v. 9) was derived from a verb meaning “to dwell.” God wanted to dwell among His people. (See Ex. 29:45). The tabernacle was the place where God revealed Himself to His people and dwelled among them. Every Israelite family had its own tent or dwelling. The tabernacle was viewed as God’s dwelling. The Lord constantly lived among His people. God wanted to share every experience that came to His people as they journeyed. By building the tabernacle, the Israelites would show they also wanted God to dwell daily with them.

The term sanctuary is another designation for the tabernacle. Other names for this place of worship include “tent” (26:36) and “the tent of the testimony” (Num. 17:7).

Though the tabernacle was God’s dwelling place, it would be wrong to assume that God was confined to that sanctuary at all times or that the Israelites could experience Him only if they visited His house. God always has been near and personal to those who trust and obey Him. Enoch had walked with God (Gen. 5:24). Noah had found favor with the Lord (Gen. 6:8). Abram had heard God calling him to leave his country and his relatives, and Abram had responded to God’s call (Gen. 12:1-4). Jacob encountered God at Bethel (Gen. 28:10-22) and again at the ford of the Jabbok (Gen. 32:22-32). Moses had experienced the Lord’s presence and heard the Lord’s call at the burning bush (Ex. 3:1-4:17). God had been with the Israelites throughout their struggles with Pharaoh and in their journeys to Mount Sinai. He was not going to abandon His people. The tabernacle symbolized God’s presence among them. Through the tabernacle He revealed Himself more fully to them. The tabernacle, however, could never confine Him. We worship a great God, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.

We refer to a church building as “God’s house.” It is His dwelling in a special way. When we set aside time to worship Him there, we can have meaningful, rich experiences with Him. While we can have special experiences with God in His house, He also is with us everywhere we go. We can experience His presence anytime and anywhere we open our hearts to Him.

God revealed to Moses His plan for worship. God showed Moses the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture (v. 9). Through the tabernacle God would instruct His people regarding spiritual truth. Thus the tabernacle must be erected according to God’s guidelines. The Israelites did not design the tabernacle according to their ideas about God. Instead, God revealed to Moses exactly how to build the tabernacle so that His people would know the truth about how to experience Him.

In verses 10-19, God gave instructions concerning the ark of the testimony. The ark of the testimony, also called the ark of the covenant, was a central furnishing of the tabernacle and the central symbol of God’s presence with His people. The ark of the testimony was a box constructed of acacia wood overlaid with pure gold. The dimensions of the ark were 45 inches in length, 27 inches in width, and 27 inches in height (v. 10). The ark was transported by poles placed into rings on the sides of the ark. The mercy seat was a slab of pure gold that served as a cover for the ark. The high priest sprinkled blood on the mercy seat once each year on the Day of Atonement as a plea for forgiveness of the people’s sins. The mercy seat symbolized God’s presence and forgiveness.

On each end of the mercy seat was a golden statue of a cherub (v. 20). The wings of the cherubim were spread over the mercy seat with their faces gazing down toward it. The faces of the cherubim were turned toward the mercy seat. Cherubim were winged angels. Cherubim functioned as guards (Gen. 3:24) or as God’s attendants (Ezek. 10:3-22). Generally they are viewed as connected with the Lord’s throne.

Total awe is the only appropriate response when we consider both God’s holiness and His great mercy. No wonder God commanded His people to build the tabernacle according to His instructions and pattern! Only He knew how to design a sanctuary that could reveal what an awesome and forgiving God He truly is. We could never discover God’s true nature through our own efforts. We can only know what God is really like because He chose to reveal Himself to us.

God instructed Moses to place the testimony in the ark and to cover the ark with the mercy seat (v. 21). The testimony referred to the two stone tablets on which were written the Ten Commandments (Ex. 24:12; 31:18; 32:15-16; 34:29). Because the two tables of the testimony were placed in the ark, it was called the ark of the testimony.

The Ten Commandments recorded on the two stone tablets revealed God’s moral demands for His people. The mercy seat was situated on top of the box in which these tablets were placed. The Hebrew term translated mercy seat is derived from the verb meaning “to cover over, to atone.” This design may suggest that while the law revealed God’s demands for His people, His mercy and forgiveness were available when the people failed to meet God’s standards for holy living. God’s mercy and grace are still available when we fail to meet His requirements for right living today.

God told Moses that He would meet with him and speak to him from above the mercy seat and from between the cherubim (v. 22). God designated that spot as a place to encounter His holy presence. From that spot He would speak to Moses and instruct His people. When the Israelites left Mount Sinai, they would not leave God behind. God would journey with them. God would continue to speak to them from above the mercy seat. Though God spoke directly to Moses, His messages were for the whole nation of Israel.

God speaks to all believers today through His indwelling Holy Spirit. He speaks to us as well through the Bible, His written Word. God also sends messages to people through specially called spokespersons. We may call those messengers pastors, preachers, evangelists, or missionaries. God’s spokespersons have a tremendous responsibility. They must be sure that before they speak for God they first have experienced God’s presence and received their messages from Him. The messages that He gives them will never contradict His written Word. Those who hear the messages through God’s spokespersons also have a great responsibility. They must recognize that each message comes from God and give it their utmost attention.

Exodus, Ruth, Proverbs: LXVI, Lifeway Resources Division, WORDsearch Corp., 2006.

Week 6: Day 2 Exodus 23:14-19

Ok, I'm back, sorry about the long delay.

In this passage, we can get distracted by the formality and the cultural things we don't understand. However, we can all understand two of the main points in this passage: 1) No one is to appear before me empty handed; 2) Bring the best of the first fruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God.

Empty handed - without anything. How often to we come to worship God with nothing. We leave worship filling unfulfilled, because we think it is for us. We came empty handed, therefore we leave empty handed. Worship is not about us, it's to be focused on God. When I hear the question, "How was church?", the hair goes up on the back of my neck. This is mans way of bringing worship down to his level, his preference. It has nothing to do with church or worship. If we come with something to offer the LORD, we will be fulfilled because we will have been obedient to come with something instead of expecting it to be for us.
Next, the something we are to bring is the "best of the first fruits". Not just something, but the best. How many times to we crawl out of bed, hurry around, hussle into the worship center, and then worship God. We've not prepared our hearts and minds to be in the presence of our ALMIGHTY GOD. We instead are just alert enough to recognize we don't like the song choice for this Sunday or the Pastor's words aren't thoughtful enough, or clever, or funny, or bold enough to move us. We are usually alert enough to jot down a note that we should share with a friend about the sermon and how it will apply to their life. Yet, we not only don't bring the best of our first fruits, we seldom bring anything.
Discuss this with your kids today. What are you to bring to God in worship? After Sunday Worship, do you talk about what you brought to worship or do you discuss the service and what it did or didn't offer you?
Final thought. If God gave His best, in His Son's death on the cross, what are we giving him?

Week 4; Day 5 Exodus 16:31-36

How do we perserve the the blessing of the Lord in our life? In this passage they took the phyisical manna and "fill(ed) and omer with it". They did this twice. One for the generations to remember, and Moses and Aaron lay it before the Lord as an offering.
What does this mean to us? How has God provided for you in the past?
These are the things we are to celebrate and remember. We as families need to sit and count our blessings together. There will be times that will get hard and we will need something to remind us in those times that God is still in control.
Our "Family Gatherings" are such times. We intend these to be a time of worship and sharing. This is for the purpose of placing our manna in a jar so that we will remember what God has done in our lives.

This month, as you continue to share with your family and your small groups, remember what God is doing in your life. Come November 5, ready to share those things and let's lift them up to God together.

Brandon

Family Gathering

Hey, last night was awesome! We haven't changed much since the days of Moses. When it comes to provisions I always thing more is better. Don't you? Here in Exodus we see God giving a specific provision for a specific day, yet the people aren't satisfied. While on vacation we ate at a restaurant that did not serve large portions. Because I'm used to eating until I'm more than full I was disappointed that did not have more. It wasn't that I was hungry any more, it's just that I wanted more.
As you read today's devotion, look at your life and decide, do you have enough? If so, what causes you to want more? I know for me, I like to know I'm taken care of. It's not easy putting faith in God when I can see down the road, or I don't have the provision in hand. That is, however, what God desires, for us to trust in Him and not in our own ability to provide.

In Him,
Brandon

Back from Maui!

Sorry for the missed days, we had some trouble logging in while I was gone, Andy tried but for some reason my passcode was out of order.
Hope you'll all remember to be here Wednseday night, doors open at 7:30 and we'll start around 7:40 this week. It seems that those closest to me were usually hurt as much as I during those times. Isn't it interesting that sin comes out of our selfish desires, and being selfish, we can't even see others at all. We only think of ourselves. It sounds like a redundant sentence but it is true. When we sin, we walk with mirrored blinders, all we see is ourself. During those moments, or days, or weeks, we could be destroying our lives as well as others, but would never know it.
Just as Pharaoh refused to listen to Moses and obey God, his people were being destroyed.
We must be cautious in our lives to protect those closest to us. His people get the plague, he tells Moses to ask God to remove the plague, Moses does so, Pharaoh refuses to keep his word to Moses. At first glance I have to say, this man is insane. Then I think of the many times I have prayed for something and bargained with God. God came through, but did I? Sometimes yes, but many times no!
Here's the deal with these next few days in the devotion. We are really going to be looking at a picture of ourself and our selfish desires vs. God's desire for us. We'll be tempted to blow it off and point fingers at the rediculous pharaoh, but it's really us God wants to speak to. So try this. Over the next few days, as you read the devotions about the plagues, think about your life, past and present. Ask God to reveal to you, your stubborness. I know we all think were very obedient, but let's be honest, if we have much to lose we can be just like pharaoh.

Week 2, Day 2: Exoduse 8:1-15

Be sure to look at the questions on your, "time alone with God" sheet for today.

I want to focus on one statement in today's reading. "...there is no one like the LORD our God."(v 10) This is a statement we should ponder today. Do I believe this statement, really? It's pretty easy for me to believe that I am capable to perform most of my day to day tasks. I begin to feel pretty self reliant after a while. It's only when stinky frogs enter my life that I take note of God. I encourage you today to really think about this. Is there really "no one like the LORD our God?" How often do I treat God like just another entrusion into my day? It's when my heart is hardened that God needs to throw some stinky frogs in my path. Prayerfully, I'll have a different response than Pharaoh's hardened heart.

That's my thought for today, hopefully it will trigger some thoughts for you as well.

Brandon

Week 2, Day 1: Exodus

Moses Vs. We want to make sure no one is looking. Problem is, someone is always watching, even if it's just God. He knows all things. We should really think twice about any action that causes us to have to look around before we act.
v. 13-15 Moses flees
We see here consequences to Moses' actions. Something we can discuss with our kids here is simple, think through consequences to your actions. What happens when we react to conflict as opposed to thinking things through before we act?

v. 16-25 Waiting on God
God is always preparing us for something. He's always forging us in the fire, so to speak. Moses spent much time in the desert, and he probably thought God forgot all about him. We find out tomorrow the thruth of this. The Isaelites too felt God had forgotten them, but it is clear at the end of this chapter that, "God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob."
We have to remember, God never forgets His promises to us. We may not always understand our circumstances, but we can trust God knows what He is doing.

Final thoughts for today:
Think of how you might handle the life situation your in today. Think through your actions this week. Did you have to look this way or that before anything you did this week? How have you responded to those around you this week? What is God preparing you to do?

Have a great day, I'll have more to say tomorrow.

Day Three

We're three days in, be sure to spend some time with God today. Here are my thoughts on Exodus 2:1-10.

First, as a parent, I don't know how Moses' Mother did it. She was supposed to drown her son according to the law of the land. Instead she put him in a basket and sent him down the river. Now we read this with hindsight, thinking maybe she knew that her son would be ok. On the contrary, this must have been horible for her. She place a baby afloat not knowing what would happen. She might have hoped and prayed that God would show mercy, but she didn't know what would happen. What an incredible faith? The question I ask myself here, would I be willing to release my children into God's hand? Do I try to control what happens to my kids?

Next, Pharaoh's daugher. I'm not sure what was going on in her mind. It says she felt sorry for the baby. Maybe she was unaware of what decree her father had set on the Hebrew people. Perhaps she was a rebellious child who thought, "I'll show my father!" I just don't know what caused her to do what she did(the Spirit of God is my Sunday School answer).

Finally, the sister. What a brave girl. Again, maybe her mother sent her, or she was determined to make sure her brother was safe. She could have had plans to get him out herself. What we do know is that she was bold enough to approach the Pharaoh's daughter and make plan to get her brother back in her home. Not only did this happen, the family got paid to raise ther own child. This speaks to me in the area of boldness. How bold am I in the times I need to be? Sometimes I overthink consequences, this girl through caution to the wind and stepped up to the plate.

Those are just a few thoughts. I welcome your thoughts on the subject and would love to hear from some of you about how family worship is going. Please email me any stories or testimonies about how God is working in your family.

Brandon

Exodus 1:15-22 (Day 2)

Welcome to day 2. Hopefully you've taken some time to read the passage. Here's a few questions you might want to ask your kids today:

What did Pharaoh ask the midwives to do? Did they obey? Why/Why not?

What was the result?

Would you consider the midwives courageous? Explain.

What does it take to be spiritually courageous?

Also, encourage discussion on how this applies today. What are things you are asked to do that might go against your convictions or against God's word? How do you handle those choices? Who do you talk to about your choices or seek advice? These questions should create a way to bring this story into our lives and begin to apply the principles we learn from these midwives. It's more important to trust and obey God than to bow to the pressure of those around you.

God Bless and hope your day goes well.

Brandon

Sunday, September 7

This is the first day of LXVI, and we are so excited. We saw 50 students this morning, and read God's word together. This is exciting! I hope you encourage you kids this week to continue to pursue Christ throught the reading of His Word. Today's reading is Exodus 1:1-22. The Journal entry is only verses 1-14 of that chapter.
Parents here's a few questions you can ask your kid today:

What happened to the Israelites after Joseph died?

Was this part of God's plan? Why or why not?

Is it possible that God's plan could mean you will suffer? Explain.

What should be your response?

Just ask the questions(be sure you've read the passage as well) and let the discussion flow. There is not right or wrong way to do this, so don't be intimidated. This is only the beginning. Our prayer is that over the next few months that conversation about God's word will me the norm in households as we work together to disciple your children.

God bless and keep at it.

Brandon

Wednesday, Septtember 3

Wednesday was great. Sorry I didn't add this sooner but our office was shut down for new carpet on thursday.
Overview:
We talked about LXVI and the importance that the parents play in discipleship.
We discussed Deuteronomy 6:4-9, 2 Chronicles 34, and Nehimiah 4.
Andy shared that Jr. High parents are like soccer parents at the U-6 level, "On the Field" with their kids, in discipleship. This simply means we believe if you're a parent of a jr. high student, we hope you'll take a very active role with the 7 Day Reading Journals and questions.
Brandon, thats me, shared that High School students should be growing "On their own" and we really want the parents involved on the sidelines. This means you're an encourager and should be asking the questions on the 7 Day Journals but not necessarilly reading with them.
However, in both cases, we acknowledge that you know your kids better than we, and we're here to support you, the parent.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us!

Brandon

Before Family Gathering

I just wanted to comment before we gather tonight. My prayer is that tonight will be the beginning of a change in our ministry. I hope you, the parents, realize our desire to serve you. I really think this generation of teens have great potential to serve our God. This, however, takes much effort on our part(family & church). That's really all I wanted to say before the meeting. Tomorrow, I'm sure I'll have more to say. Just know that you are in my prayers as parents. I have seen the exodus of teenagers from the church. I believe, with Christ's strength, we can overcome this. Together we can prepare our youth to face the struggles and temptations that lay ahead.

In Him,
Brandon

Copy of Parent Letter

Dear Parent,

I am excited to be writing you this letter. UTURN and ROCK SOLID Ministries are moving in a great direction and we want you to join us. September 3 we will be having our very first Family Gathering. This gathering will serve two purposes. First it gives our families one night a month to gather together and worship God through song and sharing. The second purpose it to keep parents better informed about both calendar events as well as what God is doing in our ministry.
Let me share also with you three words that you will hear often over the next few years. These three words are SUPPORT, SUPPLY, and SUPPLEMENT. These will be the foundation of a dramatic paradigm shift in our ministry. Instead of what has been traditionally a drop of spot for spiritual growth(youth ministry), we believe God has entrusted this role to parents. In light of Deuteronomy 6:4-9, we want to Support the family in this endeavor. We are hear to encourage you to enjoy this stage of raising your kids in the Lord. We also understand that this is a partnership between the Church and the Family. Understanding this, we will be Supplying you with the tools necessary to encourage spiritual growth in the home. This will be discussed at the gathering in depth. Finally, we also will be partnering by Supplementing what is going on in the home through teaching the Word on Sundays and encouraging your students through small group ministry. Please attend this Wednesday to hear more about this strategy.
This will not affect our weekly ministries or our regular programs. It is simply a shift in strategy in how we intentionally plan to help you in the discipleship of you students. We believe in the Family and we believe in the Church. I believe if we work together we can turn a generation’s focus back to Christ. Please join us as we do this.
Wednesday night, September 3, we will open the doors to the Worship Center. We’ll kick things off around 7:50. Please make this a priority as we will do this every first Wednesday of the month. Come join us as we worship God as families and commit our families to His service.
If you have any questions there are a few things you can do. First you can call. I can be reached at work, 559-686-0004, or on my cell, 559-972-0118. We can’t expect to become mature in our faith without committing time and energy into our relationship with God.

Develop a Plan: This is where we want to help. We will provide you with “DiscipleHelps” Journals for you. This will give you a simple plan for daily time with God through prayer and bible study. We will also provide you with a seven day reading guide each week to put you in the word. Not only will we give you these seven days on your own, we will structure everything we do to surround those seven days with supplementary teaching and discussion through UTURN Sundays and Small Groups. We are committed to you to Supply the tools you need to grow, Support you in that growth, and Supplement you with loving adults who want to encourage you along the way through teaching and accountability.

Expectations: Expect to Grow. Just like a garden, if you tend to it, it will grow and flourish and produce something. In your life in Christ, if you tend to it, you will grow and flourish and produce fruit that others can see and enjoy.

God’s Word: Luke 8:1-15
v.5 & v.12 – In one ear and out the other
v.6 & v.13 – Emotional, cry, even said a prayer, but no heart change
v.7 & v.14 – Never missed youth group, when youth group gone, so goes their faith
v.8 & v.15 – Disciple of Christ, one who has committed, submitted and producing fruit through their relationship with Jesus. This is the only group that will see heaven and eternal life.

What will you do?
Tonight our challenge begins. Begin to count the cost of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Our heart is to teach the truth, even if unpopular. We believe that if we can produce disciples through the power of the Holy Spirit, God will bless us as individuals as well as a ministry. The question you must ask yourself is this, “Am I tired of playing games? Am I tired of the camp highs and the valley lows? Am I ready to commit my life, submit it to Christ, and tend my garden in a way that will cause it to flourish and bear fruit?” You need to answer these questions before you will ever really experience the abundant life Christ offers. Jesus tells us, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:39)

See Video Below

Added a fun old song to the page at the bottom. We want to engage the entire family this year as well as reach the families of students who may not be a part of our body. Our first attempt at this is the Family Gathering. Last year we met on the first Wednesday of the month for our high school small groups to gather together and worship. This year we will take that and extend it to our jr. high students as well as all of our parents. This will be a time of worship and celebration. There will be a time for sharing and testimonies of how God is working in your family. Finally, we'll dismiss the students and I'll take a brief time to inform parents about our upcoming events as well as the upcoming month of ministry. Prayerfully it will be a time of encouragment and renewal for the entire family. In a world of go, go, go...we'll call you to stop and be still, to recognize who God is and what his desire is for you.
Please make this a priority as there are only seven during the entire year(Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec., Feb., March, Apr.) So put it on your calendar, make it a priority, let us encourage you and let your kids see you worship the Lord and worship God with you.

The Family Gatherings will be from 7:45 PM - 8:45 PM, the first Wednesday of each month.

What is LXVI?

--LXVI is a curriculum that will allow us to Supprort each student in their spiritual growth, Supply them with tools that will challenge and help the to deepen the walk with Christ, and Supplement their learning as adults cultivate relationships that go below the surface.
--LXVI is a comprehensive approach to discipleship that will include, or better encourage the parent to take an active role in their child's discipleship as described in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. We hope to Support the family by Supplying them with tools to dig into God's word together, and Supplementing some teaching on Sunday mornings as well as in our small group ministry.
--LXVI NUTS & BOLTS: Sunday mornings we will teach the word. Our adult leaders will be taking the time to prepare each week a portion of scripture to teach in context to our students. Small group leaders will then take that portion of scripture and dig deeper causing the students to look intently into the word to see how it applies to our lives today, what changes we might need to make in our lives and such. Students and paretents will receive a seven day devotion guide to reade each day and discuss together. Students will also receive a thirteen week reading guide to read the entire portion of scripture that will be studied on Sundays and throughout the week.
--LXVI: Our prayer is that parents will take an active role in discipling their kids at home. The church is here to Support, Supply, and Supplement as needed. God has given us, as parents, the mandate to pass on the Faith that we received. Please join with us this year as we work side by side to charge a generation to be in love with God and His Word.

Please check this site often to get updates on the reading guides, daily readings, questions to discuss, and events coming up. We want no one to miss out on the opportunity to grow in Christ or in Community with other believers.

Slow Week

Hey Parents,
This is a slow week but did want to update you on what's coming up. Just wanted to let parents and students know what we learned. "RISE OF THE KINEMATICS" (kinimatic - motion without regard to cause). This week we looked at knowing what a Christian believes about God, Jesus, Man, the Church, and Scripture. It was a great beginning for us to begin the year knowing what we believe. I hope to continue this year to add to that with our new format of teaching/discipling our students.
Here's how we plan to help this year. Sunday mornings will be our kick off each week to discipleship as we begin a study in Exodus, Ruth, and Proverbs. Each Sunday our students will be taught a section of scripture. The will then be given a seven day devotion guide to take them deeper as well as a thirteen week reading guide to read through all three books that we'll be studying. Small groups will go deeper together into the word that was taught on Sunday as well as what the students are learning in their personal devotion time. Parents are encouraged to take the seven day devotion guide and discuss with their kids in the mornings, on the way to school, at dinner, or even just before bed. We are doing this to help you fulfill Deuteronomy 6 in you home. Let's this year begin to partner together to set a firm foundation for our kids, and remember UTURN/ROCK SOLID exists to Support the Family, Supply you and your kids with the tools to grow spiritually, and Supplement part of the discipleship process as needed. Know that our doors are open and we would love to hear from you!

Student Leadership video

If you would like to see a little video about our experience at Saddleback, check this site and watch. We'll try to catch you up on the calendar, what's being taught on Sunday's and how you can follow up with your kids. This year we want to bring you inside UTURN and ROCK SOLID to be a part of the mix. Three words i want every parent to think of when they think of us; Support, Supply, Supplement. We are here to first support you the parent as you take on the challenge of raising your kids. We also want to supply you with the tools you might want or need to disciple your son/daugter at home(Deut. 6). Finally we will be glad you supplement where you need us to. If you have questions or concerns give us a call. I pray that this year will be a great year for all of us.
